Feature: What Was That Special Time We Felt During a Stay?
The special feature of Issue No. 6 focuses on “Staying.” Either a place briefly visited as a tourist or a destination for permanent relocation, this theme reflects on the suspended, almost motionless sense of time that arises when one remains in a place for a fixed period, and on the relationships that were formed by chance with those who happened to be nearby.
When we stayed at the bookstore ON READING for 11 days to produce this magazine, people of various ages—who happened to stop by to help—began freely sharing stories about their backgrounds and interests as they worked. Witnessing this, we felt a strange sense of solidarity. What a quiet and special time it was. It felt like a kind of stay that was uniquely meaningful to us: being able to step slightly away from the world as it is now, becoming deeply immersed while still aware that we would eventually return, spending time creating things or simply doing nothing.
That time will never come back, yet before us remains a physical accumulation of paper. And so, we are able to encounter that time again and again—toward the special places and moments that are born through staying.
